Councillor Nasim Ali

Councillor Nasim Ali, the first Bangladeshi Mayor of Camden, has lived in the London Borough of Camden for 28 years.

He attended Netley Primary School and Sir William Collins Secondary School, now known as South Camden Community School. Nasim went on to become a co-opted Governor of South Camden Community School. Two years ago he completed his distance learning degree in Informal and Community Education and graduated from the University of Kent.

Since the age of 14 he has been involved in voluntary work. He has always been interested in working with people for the benefit of people. Nasim is a keen football fan and has used football as a way of bringing people together. In 1995, he set up the Camden United project, using football to bring together conflicting groups of Bangladeshi and white youths. The project received various local and national awards, including recognition from the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE). The current Camden United project has players of 13 different nationalities. After the riots in Oldham, the Camden United project was highlighted as a model of good practice, by the BBC, to promote community cohesion.

In 1998, Nasim was awarded one of the first Camden Good Citizen Awards for his work in uniting local young people and diverting them away from crime, drugs and conflict.

As part of his voluntary work he is currently on the Prince's Trust London North West Committee, an independent advisor to the Metropolitan Police and also a management committee member of the West Euston Community Association.

Nasim has also been a member of the King's Cross Partnership Board and Governor for the Westminster Kingsway College. Nasim is also the chair of the King's Cross Health Partnership which was awarded just under one million pounds by the New Opportunities Fund as part of the Healthy Living Centres Initiative. There are more than 40 organisations represented within the partnership.

As a profession, he manages three community centres, working with older people, young people and children from diverse backgrounds. Nasim has always had a commitment to working for equality.

He has a keen interest and commitment to valuing and promoting the views of young people and the diverse communities.
