Lunches are usually a small scale affairs that provide an opportunity for
BBPA members to meet over a relaxed Sunday lunch, to put faces to names,
usually raise a small sum for a good cause. The first luncheon of 2004 was
held at the stylish Zam Zama restaurant in Drummond Street, London NW1.
The chief
guest was Mr Sean O'Regan, headmaster of the neighbouring Dame
Edith Neville School, who spoke about his experiences in working in a
school with a large Bangladeshi intake drawn from predominantly disadvantaged
background. He emphasised the importance of good role models to inspire
the young, and called upon the BBPA membership to volunteer as potential
mentors.
The principle
beneficiary of this event was the Bisho Shahitto Kendro London,
for which, BBPA members kindly donated £200. BSKL chair Mrs Shamim
Azad talked about the cultural enrichment programmes that the BSKL
run in London, and explained that the money will be used to purchase books
from Bangladesh for the BSKL Book Club.
In addition,
a cheque for £1000 for the Mayor of Camden's Charitable Trust
was presented to Councillor Nasim Ali, the former Mayor of Camden
by BBPA Director, Ms Sarah Qureshi. The money was raised at the BBPA's
Annual Gala Dinner last December, and will benefit two projects in Bangladesh.
The first is an orphanage in Sylhet, which helps the street children by
offering them accommodation, food and clothing and the second is a primary
village school, which is falling apart, some of the children do not have
money to buy books, uniforms and sometimes food. They need help to rebuild
the school roof and have drinking water facility for the children.
